New Zoning Ordinance Doesn't Allow Vegetable Gardens

1. A Florida couple had grown a vegetable garden in the front yard of their modest home for the past 17 years, because the backyard didn't get enough sunlight.
2. A new zoning ordinance designed to "protect the distinctive character of the Miami Shores Village," was enacted and specifically prohibited vegetables from growing in front yards.
3. The local code enforcement officer gave them two choices: either uproot the garden or pay a $50 per day in fines to keep it. The couple appealed twice, but were denied an exemption, so they decided to dig up the garden rather than pay $1,500 a month to the city.

4. Just when it seemed the UN climate conference would disintegrate, Obama committed the U.S. to help, and the summit reconvened.
5. So now we are accepting liability for natural disasters which strike poor countries.
6. Let's all just admit the "inconvenient truth" and say, "Goodbye to science and hello to redistribution..."

1. The Issaquah City Council adopted an ordinance that bans single-use, plastic carryout bags at retail stores.
2. The plastic bag ban took effect on larger retailers on March 1, 2013, and for smaller retailers on March 1, 2014.
3. While not specifically a property rights issue, plastic bag bans are an indication of the "nanny state" we have become, and similar to other provisions like Agenda 21, where our lifestyle is under attack based on exaggerated environmental concerns.
4. Like many other regulations based on the "precautionary principle" bag bans have unintended consequences. After Seattle adopted a similar ordinance in July 2012, twenty-one percent of surveyed Seattle business owners said that the plastic bag ban led to an increase in shoplifting problems.

Decided March 26, 2013 by the United States Supreme Court -- held that police use of a trained detection dog to sniff for narcotics on the front porch of a private home is a "search" within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, and therefore, without consent, requires both probable cause and a search warrant.
2. In November 2006 the Miami-Dade Police Department received an anonymous tip that the residence of Joelis Jardines was being used as a marijuana grow house.
3. About a month later police surveilled the home and used a drug-detection dog at the front door, prior to securing a search warrant.
4. Prior cases supported that use of a police dog was an acceptable form of minimally invasive warrantless search, when deployed against luggage at an airport, against vehicles in a drug interdiction checkpoint, and against vehicles during routine traffic stops.
5. The Supreme Court made clear in this ruling that it considers the deployment of a police dog at the front door of a private residence is a different matter altogether.

Armed Agents Raid Animal Shelter to Confiscate and Kill a Baby Deer

1. An Illinois family found a baby deer and worried she had been abandoned by her mother, so they took it to a nearby Saint Francis "no-kill" animal shelter in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
2. The shelter took care of the fawn and made arrangements to take her to a wildlife shelter.
3. The fawn made noises like it was laughing, so the shelter staff named her "Giggles."
4. Meanwhile, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received two anonymous tips that the fawn was in the animal shelter. They conducted covert surveillance, including aerial photographs, to verify the fawn was actually present at the shelter.
5. Nine armed DNR agents and four deputy sheriffs arrived with a search warrant, then corralled all the employees into one area, while they searched for Giggles.
6. The agents tranquilized the fawn, took it off site, and euthanized it.

• Julian L. Simon and Paul Ehrlich entered in a famous scientific wager in 1980, betting on a mutually agreed-upon measure of resource scarcity over the decade leading up to 1990. Simon had Ehrlich choose five commodity metals. Copper, chromium, nickel, tin, and tungsten were chosen and Simon bet that their prices would decrease, while Ehrlich bet they would increase. Ehrlich ultimately lost the bet, and the price of all five continued to trend downward during the wager period.

They deserve to be used by anyone writing a history of the Great Plains.

2. PLF's petition for certiorari to the court, filed today, notes that EPA failed to submit the proposed "endangerment" finding for independent scientific scrutiny as required by the Clean Air Act.
3. At issue is EPA's finding, announced in December, 2009, that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from automobiles pose a danger to public health and welfare. The Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. Section 4365(c)(1)), requires that such regulations must first be submitted to EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB) before they can be promulgated. In issuing its CO2 finding, EPA failed to comply with this legal requirement.
4. PLF first petitioned the agency, in February, 2010, to rescind the endangerment finding and submit it to the SAB as the law mandates. When EPA declined, PLF filed a federal lawsuit, in October, 2010, and subsequently an appeal in conjunction with other parties who challenged the endangerment finding on separate grounds. An adverse decision - upholding the endangerment finding - was rendered last June by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. District, and a request for review by an en banc panel was denied.
5. "We are asking the Supreme Court to hear this case because EPA cannot be allowed to place itself above the law. In issuing its CO2 finding, EPA illegally shielded its work product from peer review. That's unacceptable as a matter of science, impermissible as a matter of law - and should be downright offensive for anyone concerned about openness, accountability, and integrity in the public sector."

Vincent Oscala, a 22-year old architecture student from the Philippines, spent about 4 years experimenting with SimCity to find the optimal parameters for a maximum city population to "beat" the game. In simulation it is stable for 50,000 years. His solution, which he named Magnasanti, reveals the underlying assumptions of the game--Soviet style central planning. (Which you could also refer to as Smart Growth or Agenda 21) [I don't believe the creators of SimCity knew this, they simply modeled what they saw Western Urban Planners already doing.]
4. In Magnasanti there are over 6 million residents, but no roads, so there is no traffic congestion. Instead, they have an elaborate subway system. Nearly everything people need is within walking distance. In fact wherever they go it's like their own cookie-cutter neighborhood anyway, so there is little desire to travel.
5. Hidden under the illusion of a successful city is a highly regimented lifestyle. They have high unemployment, but little education, so they don't leave. There is no crime because they have a hyper-efficient police state to maintain obedience. There are no fire stations, schools, or hospitals. They have high air pollution, poor health, short lives, and consequently, a stable population. They have all been successfully dumbed down, sickened, enslaved, and mind-controlled just enough to keep this simulation running for 50,000 years.
