New Zoning Ordinance Doesn't Allow Vegetable Gardens
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/11/19/florida-city-uproots-couples-17-year-old-garden-over-new-ordinance/

  1. A Florida couple had grown a vegetable garden in the front yard of their modest home for the past 17 years, because the backyard didn't get enough sunlight.
  2. A new zoning ordinance designed to "protect the distinctive character of the Miami Shores Village," was enacted and specifically prohibited vegetables from growing in front yards.
  3. The local code enforcement officer gave them two choices: either uproot the garden or pay a $50 per day in fines to keep it. The couple appealed twice, but were denied an exemption, so they decided to dig up the garden rather than pay $1,500 a month to the city.

Antarctic Sea Ice Hits 35-Year Record High
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2013/09/23/antarctic-sea-ice-hit-35-year-record-high-saturday/

  1. Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record large extent for a second straight year, baffling scientists seeking to understand why this ice is expanding rather than shrinking in a warming world.
  2. The ice extent bested record high levels set earlier this year and in 2012. Records date back to October 1978.

International Climate-Based Redistribution
http://www.cfact.org/2013/11/20/walkout-132-nations-led-by-china-walk-out-of-cop-19-over-loss-and-damage/
http://www.cfact.org/2013/11/24/cop-19-un-consensus-at-global-warming-summit/

  1. COP 19 -- 19th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) convened last month in Warsaw Poland.
  2. Near the beginning of the conference China has led a walkout by 132 developing nations over "loss and damage"--"If you're not paying, they're not playing."
  3. The term "Loss and Damage" is the concept of blaming the developed nations for natural disasters caused by Climate Change and holding them legally liable for the costs incurred by under-developed nations. Like the Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in the Philippines, which struck in early November.
  4. Just when it seemed the UN climate conference would disintegrate, Obama committed the U.S. to help, and the summit reconvened.
  5. So now we are accepting liability for natural disasters which strike poor countries.
  6. Let's all just admit the "inconvenient truth" and say, "Goodbye to science and hello to redistribution..."

Crossroads: Labor Pains of a New Worldview

  3. Important to understand the current thoughts of those who are taking away our property rights in the name of sustainability.

Roosters of the Apocalypse: How the Junk Science of Global Warming Nearly Bankrupted the Western World
http://www.amazon.com/dp/1934791377/

  1. From the Introduction:
  2. "Beginning in the spring of 1856, the Xhosa tribe in today's South Africa destroyed its own economy. The Xhosa killed an estimated half-million of their own cattle (which they ordinarily treated with great care and respect), ceased planting crops, and destroyed their grain stores. By the end of 1857 between thirty and fifty thousand of them had starved to death-a third to a half of the population. The British herded survivors of the once-powerful tribe into labor camps, and white settlers took much of their land."
  3. "The Xhosa had acted on the prophecy of a 15-year-old girl who promised that if they destroyed all they had and purified themselves of "witchcraft" (including evil inclinations and selfishness), the world before the white invaders came would be restored: The British oppressors would flee, and the Xhosa ancestors would return, bringing with them an even greater abundance of cattle and grain...."
  4. "The apocalyptic vision to which we subscribe has a superficial scientific gloss-"climate change"-making it palatable to the modern mind, but at bottom both visions prescribe economic suicide. And both promise self-sacrifice will bring about a golden age."

Issaquah Bag Ban--Petition Signature Drive
http://www.ci.issaquah.wa.us/index.aspx?NID=1170
http://townhall.com/tipsheet/taylorcolwell/2013/07/28/plastic-bag-bans-increase-crime-n1650033

  1. The Issaquah City Council adopted an ordinance that bans single-use, plastic carryout bags at retail stores.
  2. The plastic bag ban took effect on larger retailers on March 1, 2013, and for smaller retailers on March 1, 2014.
  3. While not specifically a property rights issue, plastic bag bans are an indication of the "nanny state" we have become, and similar to other provisions like Agenda 21, where our lifestyle is under attack based on exaggerated environmental concerns.
  4. Like many other regulations based on the "precautionary principle" bag bans have unintended consequences. After Seattle adopted a similar ordinance in July 2012, twenty-one percent of surveyed Seattle business owners said that the plastic bag ban led to an increase in shoplifting problems.
  5. If you want to help oppose the Issaquah measure please contact Craig Keller -- Email: craig@saveourchoice.us -- Phone: (206) 935-4625

EPA Abuse
http://epaabuse.com/

  1. EPAAbuse.com is dedicated to exposing the dangerous policies of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and presenting common sense and science-based rebuttals to irrational policy reactions to alleged "man-made" climate change or global warming.
  2. EPAAbuse.com is unapologetically pro-free enterprise and anti-socialist. The environmental movement is an aggressive tool used by "watermelons" to promote globalist and anti-capitalist objectives.
  3. EPAAbuse.com includes a feature called the "Watermelon Patch"

Tales of Tyranny: Joe Remenar's "Illegal" Wildlife Habitat
http://myfreedomfoundation.com/blog/liberty-live/detail/tales-of-tyranny-joe-remenars-illegal-wildlife-habitat (4 min video)

  1. Joe Remenar decided that he wanted to share his land with the local wildlife and even improve it to attract more species to the area. He spent his own time and money on the project.
  2. The one thing he didn't do was ask for permission from the local government. Now, despite the fact that Joe's actions actually created a positive environment for the local wildlife, Whatcom County's central planners have demanded that Joe destroy the improvement he made to his land.

Florida v. Jardines
http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/florida-v-jardines/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_v._Jardines
http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/12pdf/11-564_5426.pdf

  1. Decided March 26, 2013 by the United States Supreme Court -- held that police use of a trained detection dog to sniff for narcotics on the front porch of a private home is a "search" within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, and therefore, without consent, requires both probable cause and a search warrant.
  2. In November 2006 the Miami-Dade Police Department received an anonymous tip that the residence of Joelis Jardines was being used as a marijuana grow house.
  3. About a month later police surveilled the home and used a drug-detection dog at the front door, prior to securing a search warrant.
  4. Prior cases supported that use of a police dog was an acceptable form of minimally invasive warrantless search, when deployed against luggage at an airport, against vehicles in a drug interdiction checkpoint, and against vehicles during routine traffic stops.
  5. The Supreme Court made clear in this ruling that it considers the deployment of a police dog at the front door of a private residence is a different matter altogether.

Can the Police Ignore "No Trespassing" Signs?
http://www.volokh.com/2013/09/03/can-police-enter-property-marked-trespassing-signs-take-two/

  1. In Florida v. Jardines the Supreme Court indicated that a police officer's right to walk up to a front door of a person's home is subject to an implied license based on existing social norms--the habits of the country.
  2. The "implied license" permits the visitor to approach the home by the front path, knock promptly, wait briefly to be received, and then (absent invitation to linger longer) leave.
  3. In United States v. Denim, 2013 the district court held that "no trespassing signs" do not revoke the "implied license" of Jardines; that officers can approach the front door and knock on the door despite the signs:

Armed Agents Raid Animal Shelter to Confiscate and Kill a Baby Deer
http://www.ksbw.com/news/armed-agents-raid-animal-shelter-for-baby-deer/-/1852/21284416/-/ddysk0z/-/index.html

  1. An Illinois family found a baby deer and worried she had been abandoned by her mother, so they took it to a nearby Saint Francis "no-kill" animal shelter in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
  2. The shelter took care of the fawn and made arrangements to take her to a wildlife shelter.
  3. The fawn made noises like it was laughing, so the shelter staff named her "Giggles."
  4. Meanwhile, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received two anonymous tips that the fawn was in the animal shelter. They conducted covert surveillance, including aerial photographs, to verify the fawn was actually present at the shelter.
  5. Nine armed DNR agents and four deputy sheriffs arrived with a search warrant, then corralled all the employees into one area, while they searched for Giggles.
  6. The agents tranquilized the fawn, took it off site, and euthanized it.

Climate Cooling Trend Proving Difficult for Climate Alarmists
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/11/science/earth/what-to-make-of-a-climate-change-plateau.html
http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2013/06/climate-change

  • Two articles show how hard it is for climate alarmists to reconcile facts with their incorrect theories of global warming. Here's some quotes from the articles.
  • "As unlikely as this may sound, we have lucked out in recent years when it comes to global warming."
  • "The slowdown is a bit of a mystery to climate scientists."
  • "We certainly cannot conclude, as some people want to, that carbon dioxide is not actually a greenhouse gas. More than a century of research thoroughly disproves that claim."
  • "In fact, scientists can calculate how much extra heat should be accumulating from the human-caused increases in greenhouse gases, and the energies involved are staggering. By a conservative estimate, current concentrations are trapping an extra amount of energy equivalent to 400,000 Hiroshima bombs exploding across the face of the earth every day."
  • "So the real question is where all that heat is going, if not to warm the surface. And a prime suspect is the deep ocean. Our measurements there are not good enough to confirm it absolutely, but a growing body of research suggests this may be an important part of the answer."
  • "GLOBAL warming has slowed. The rate of warming of over the past 15 years has been lower than that of the preceding 20 years.
  • "There is no serious doubt that our planet continues to heat, but it has heated less than most climate scientists had predicted."
  • "But there's no way around the fact that this reprieve for the planet is bad news for proponents of policies, such as carbon taxes and emissions treaties, meant to slow warming by moderating the release of greenhouse gases. The reality is that the already meagre prospects of these policies, in America at least, will be devastated if temperatures do fall outside the lower bound of the projections that environmentalists have used to create a panicked sense of emergency."
  • "Whether or not dramatic climate-policy interventions remain advisable, they will become harder, if not impossible, to sell to the public, which will feel, not unreasonably, that the scientific and media establishment has cried wolf."
  • "As a rule, climate scientists were previously very confident that the planet would be warmer than it is by now, and no one knows for sure why it isn't. This isn't a crisis for climate science. This is just the way science goes. But it is a crisis for climate-policy advocates who based their arguments on the authority of scientific consensus."

Julian Simon
http://www.fee.org/the_freeman/detail/hoodwinking-the-nation-by-julian-simon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV_38mQ1iG4 (4 min video)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon%E2%80%93Ehrlich_wager

  • Book Review of Hoodwinking the Nation by Julian Simon, Why Have Pernicious Falsehoods about the Environment Spread Like Wildfire
  • Youtube Video shortly before his death in 1998. Describes how the availability of all natural resources increases over time.
  • Julian L. Simon and Paul Ehrlich entered in a famous scientific wager in 1980, betting on a mutually agreed-upon measure of resource scarcity over the decade leading up to 1990. Simon had Ehrlich choose five commodity metals. Copper, chromium, nickel, tin, and tungsten were chosen and Simon bet that their prices would decrease, while Ehrlich bet they would increase. Ehrlich ultimately lost the bet, and the price of all five continued to trend downward during the wager period.

Property Rights and Communism
http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/

  • The theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property.
  • Property, in its present form, is based on the antagonism of capital and wage labour.
  • You reproach us with intending to do away with your property. Precisely so; that is just what we intend.
  • But don't wrangle with us so long as you apply, to our intended abolition of bourgeois property, the standard of your bourgeois notions of freedom, culture, law, &c. Your very ideas are but the outgrowth of the conditions of your bourgeois production and bourgeois property, just as your jurisprudence is but the will of your class made into a law for all, a will whose essential character and direction are determined by the economical conditions of existence of your class.
  • The proletariat will use its political supremacy to wrest, by degree, all capital from the bourgeoisie, to centralise all instruments of production in the hands of the State, i.e., of the proletariat organised as the ruling class; and to increase the total productive forces as rapidly as possible.
  • Of course, in the beginning, this cannot be effected except by means of despotic inroads on the rights of property...
  • These measures will, of course, be different in different countries. Nevertheless, in most advanced countries, the following will be pretty generally applicable.
  1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
  2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
  3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
  4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
  5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
  6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
  7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
  8. Equal liability of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
  9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.
  10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, &c, &c.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/06/25/us-usa-court-property-idUSBRE95O0XM20130625

  1. PLF filed a petition on behalf of Koontz in the United States Supreme Court, asking it to establish two points: (1) That Nollan and Dolan applies to an exaction that takes the form of a government demand that the applicant improve property off-site; and (2)That tthese doctrines extend to permit exactions, where the permit has been denied due to the applicant's rejection of that exaction.
  2. PLF will present info on this decision at our November 7, 2013 meeting.

Back to the Future: Living the Light Rail Disaster
http://myfreedomfoundation.com/blog/liberty-live/detail/back-to-the-future-living-the-light-rail-disaster

  1. By Glen Morgan
  2. The original light rail system that covered much of the Puget Sound region for many years was shut down in 1940 because it became impossible to support financially.
  3. Today, our Central Planners choose to ignore history and travel back in time to enjoy a 19th century transportation technology on a bloated 21st century budget.
  4. Current and future generations won't be able to afford the predictable light rail disaster in Washington State...

Hans Rosling: Religions and babies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezVk1ahRF78 (13.3 min video)

  1. Predominant religion by nation has very little do with the population growth.
  2. Population on the planet will level off at about 10 billion. It's inevitable.

Green Cross International
http://www.gcint.org/our-history

  1. First Green Cross International's roots can be traced back to President Mikhail Gorbachev's time in office as Head of State of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a period during which he spoke repeatedly about the interrelated threats humanity and our Earth face from nuclear arms, chemical weapons, unsustainable development, and the man-induced decimation of the planet's ecology.
  2. On 19 January 1990, in Moscow during an address to the Global Forum on Environment and Development for Survival, Mikhail Gorbachev suggested creating an "international Green Cross that offers its assistance to States in ecological trouble." The world needed a body that would apply the medical emergency response model of the International Committee of the Red Cross to ecological issues, and expedite solutions to environmental problems that transcend national borders.

Bonn Press release: UN Agenda 21 frustrated by property rights advocates
http://www.cfact.org/2013/06/01/bonn-press-release-un-agenda-21-frustrated-by-property-rights-advocates/

  1. For years ICLEI has been flying under the radar -- inserting their agenda into local governments while escaping the notice of taxpayers.
  2. Efforts to expose ICLEI"s strategy appear to be paying off.
  3. Local governments have begun to say, 'no!" to ICLEI, once taxpayers get to know what ICLEI is, what they're up to and learn more about UN Agenda 21.
  4. The Green campaigners in Bonn are frustrated. That shows that the work of all of us who have labored to educate the public about their tactics are bearing fruit.

NASA Report Says CO2 Causes Cooling, not Warming

http://www.amazon.com/Slaying-Sky-Dragon-Greenhouse-ebook/dp/B004DNWJN6
http://principia-scientific.org/

  1. Green House Gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), reflect heating energy rather than absorb it.
  2. According to the data, up to 95 percent of solar radiation is literally bounced back into space by both CO2 and NO in the upper atmosphere.
  3. Principia Scientific International -- Slaying the Sky Dragon - Death of the Greenhouse Gas Theory

Global Warming Caused by CFCs, not CO2
http://phys.org/news/2013-05-global-chlorofluorocarbons-carbon-dioxide.html

  1. According to new research chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are to blame for global warming since the 1970s and not carbon dioxide.
  2. Cosmic-ray-driven electron-reaction (CRE) theory says cosmic rays play the dominant role in breaking down chlorofluorocarbon molecules and then ozone.
  3. "What's striking is that since 2002, global temperatures have actually declined - matching a decline in CFCs in the atmosphere," Professor Lu said. "My calculations of CFC greenhouse effect show that there was global warming by about 0.6 °C from 1950 to 2002, but the earth has actually cooled since 2002. The cooling trend is set to continue for the next 50-70 years as the amount of CFCs in the atmosphere continues to decline."
  4. [What's most amazing is when the evidence is finally irrefutable that there's no correlation between increasing CO2 and temperature, they can still find some way to blame humans for climate change.]

Theory of Cosmic Rays and Climate Change
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_ray

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANMTPF1blpQ (53 min video)

  1. Cosmic rays are created by supernovae of massive stars outside of the solar system.
  2. Cosmic rays are thought to be responsible for "aerosols" and cloud formation.
  3. Increased cloud cover reflects sun light away from the earth before it can heat the Earth.
  4. Spiral arms of galaxy contain huge differences in cosmic rays.
  5. Movement of the solar system through these spiral arms could be responsible for past ice ages.

Your Property and Property Rights Are Being Dynamited!
http://smallthoughts.com/blog/permalink/0140.html

  1. Authored by C. Jeffery Small, Architect.
  2. Details repeated failures of government planners to forecast housing needs. Resulting in construction, economic decline, demolition, and reconstruction, all in the name of "Urban Renewal."

Brave New Codes
http://www.architectmagazine.com/codes-and-standards/brave-new-codes.aspx

  1. Great places weren't being produced under Euclidean zoning... "It became evident that this regulatory framework was really what was driving suburbia, sprawl, and the things that were being criticized as being inefficient and unsustainable... It wasn't that people wanted it to be that way-the codes were just written that way."
  2. Instead of focusing only on the separation of types of land uses, form-based codes are organized around the physical form that a development should take. Under the guidance of a regulating plan, form-based codes emphasize connectivity between buildings, their façades, and the public realm, and how those connections play out across variously scaled streets and blocks.
  3. "The code is really a tool to implement the vision that everyone has agreed upon. So it's more time- and labor-intensive upfront, but once everyone's agreed on the vision, then the rules are very clear and the process for development goes much more quickly," claims Wyant. "There don't have to be public hearings, and the NIMBYs don't have to show up, because the project conforms with the vision everyone's agreed upon."
  4. "I'll tell you one thing: Miami 21, everybody read," says former Mayor Manny Diaz. "From commas and semicolons to substantive provisions." "That's partially because the process of rewriting the code was made intentionally participatory, with more than 500 public meetings throughout the process. But the main reason it was so closely scrutinized is because the new code is a form-based code, one that seeks to achieve a specific urban form by focusing on the relationship between buildings, streets, and public spaces. "There was resistance up front. And, I wouldn't kid you, there's still resistance," says Diaz, who was termed out of office last fall. Miami 21 is likely the most important legacy of his tenure at the city's helm. The new code emphasizes mixed uses, walkability, and the predictable development of neighborhoods via "orderly housing transitions" and "proportional buildings with proper setbacks," among other urban design principles.

The Dust Bowl--The Origin of Soil Conservation Movement
http://www.garynorth.com/public/10354.cfm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQCwhjWNcH8 (25.5 min video--The Plow That Broke the Plains, 1937)

  1. Ken Burns The Dust Bowl, is a sophisticated propaganda film in the tradition of Pare Lorentz's 1936 film, The Plow That Broke the Plains. Burns even uses a clip from the movie
  2. The Plow That Broke the Plains, was a propaganda film, produced by the US government, to convince people that farming was changing the Great Plains into a desert and The New Deal alone could save the plains from becoming like Arabia.
  3. The film was so blatantly misleading, with some of the scenes faked, that it was forced it out of circulation in 1939.
  4. As Malin wrote in his detailed scholarly articles, the dust storms have been a recurring feature of the Great Plains. Long before there were tractors, there were dust storms. The grassland did not protect the region's residents from these storms. In 1946, the Kansas Historical Quarterly published three of his articles on dust storms from 1850 to 1900. They deserve to be used by anyone writing a history of the Great Plains.

The Collapse Of The Bison-Hunting Societies On The Great Plains
http://ssrn.com/abstract=2042695

  1. Essay by Property and Environment Research Center (PERC)
  2. PERC is dedicated to improving environmental quality through property rights and markets.
  3. Changes in property rights regimes, in market forces, and changes in legal-political institutions ultimately determined the fate of native bison societies.
  4. Findings are contrasted and compared with those Jared Diamond.
  5. Includes these forces: 1) Pressure for land and resources from white immigrants to the east. 2) The emergence of the horse into native societies allowing extensive exploitation of the bison, along with a increased intertribal conflicts. 3) The emergence of a bison hide market and the inability of tribes to enforce property rights over land and bison led to rapid and dramatic depletion of the bison herds.
  6. Study did not find evidence of changes in climate or the natural environment as an important factor.

Busting Forest Myths: People as Part of the Solution
http://perc.org/articles/busting-forest-myths-people-part-solution

  1. The long-held contention that rural forest communities are the prime culprits in tropical forest destruction is increasingly being discredited, as evidence mounts that the best way to protect rainforests is to involve local residents.
  2. Local communities are the most effective managers of their forests, best able to combine sustainable harvests with conservation.
  3. This study dispels seven myths of deforestation and concludes that ecosystems are protected best by protecting the land rights of inhabitants. That "Global natural resource protection and production for the benefit of all will only be achieved in coming decades if the rights of rural and forest-dwelling people in the developing world are respected."

Saving African Rhinos

http://perc.org/articles/saving-african-rhinos-market-success-story
http://perc.org/sites/default/files/Saving%20African%20Rhinos%20final.pdf

  1. In 1900, the southern white rhinoceros was the most endangered of the five rhinoceros species.
  2. Uncontrolled rhino hunting and poaching for rhino horn had devastated the rhino population.
  3. But by 2010, white rhino numbers had climbed to more than 20,000, making it the most common rhino species on the planet.
  4. The white rhino was saved from extinction by secure private ownership and "ranching" rhinos. Private owners could then profit from controlled and limited trophy hunting.
  5. The price of a white rhino increased from R5 000 in 1985 to R50 000 in 1998. There was a growing and strong incentive to breed and preserve rhinos.
  6. Strong property rights and market incentives have provided a better model for rhino conservation, than command-and-control approaches, which rely on regulations and bans to restrict wildlife use.

How Fossil Fuels are Greening the Planet

  1. Matt Ridley, author of The Red Queen, Genome, The Rational Optimist.
  2. Over the past three decades, our planet has steadily become greener!
  3. Increasing CO2 enhances the growth of vegetation.
  4. Increasing population is occurring at the same time as increasing food supply and a greener planet.
  5. Only about one-third the land is necessary to grow the same amount of food.
  6. Reforestation is occurring in about half the world.
  7. The UK has tripled its forest land since 1900.
  8. Using fossil fuels prevents us from using resources, which compete with wildlife. Such as wood and whale oil.
  9. Nearly all extinctions that have occurred are on islands. If you don't count islands, and don't count sub-species, the total number of species that have gone extinct since 1500 is only 9. NINE!!!
  10. Wildlife of all sorts around the world is thriving and increasing.
  11. As we use resources which are better for economic development we also create circumstances which are better for the environment.

High-Density Housing Causes Lower Fertility Rates
http://www.news.com.au/story-e6frfmd0-1226135327168

  1. Academic warns that dense housing is linked to lower birth rates.
  2. High-density housing threatens traditional family lifestyles and can cause lower fertility rates. It is even more effective at limiting the number of children than China's one-child policy.

  1. Over 200 years ago, Thomas Malthus predicted that population growth would exceed production capacity.
  2. The last two centuries have proven him wrong. Per capita incomes have soared. Resources are more plentiful, and fertility has declined everywhere, and most of all among the wealthy.
  3. Birth rates are declining all over the world, but most severely in the more developed regions.
  4. The EU has more to lose from the "birth dearth" than many other areas, because it "bit off more social commitments than it can chew."
  5. Plug & Pray is a 90 minute documentary film (available on NetFlicks) about the promise, problems and ethics of artificial intelligence and robotics.
  6. "Someday, states may breed babies in bottles, like in Brave New World, and raise them in communal camps. Dictators... may force women to bear more children. Robots may learn to change diapers, wash clothes, and chauffeur kids around. Medicine may rejuvenate older women and their partners to induce more births in their forties and fifties. Until then, European children are likely to become scarcer."

Table and Chairs Horse Shelter
http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/horseshelter.asp

  1. The story goes that a farmer made a giant table and chairs, after being denied a building permit for a horse shelter. No permission is needed for tables and chairs.
  2. Actually, they were built by a wood dealer in Germany to advertise his products, in addition to providing shelter to his horses. There is no evidence that he did this to avoid any regulations.

Obama's Soviet Mistake
http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/19-11-2012/122849-obama_soviet_mistake-0/

  1. This was in the English version of Pravda, the Russian news service:
  2. "The Communists have won in America... America continues to repeat the Soviet mistake."
  3. "Recently, Obama has been re-elected for a 2nd term by an illiterate society and he is ready to continue his lies of less taxes while he raises them. He gives speeches of peace and love in the world while he promotes wars as he did in Egypt, Libya and Syria. He plans his next war is with Iran as he fires or demotes his generals who get in the way."
  4. "... liberalism is a psychosis. Obama even keeps the war going along the Mexican border with projects like "fast and furious" and there is still no sign of ending it. He is a Communist without question promoting the Communist Manifesto without calling it so. How shrewd he is in America. His cult of personality mesmerizes those who cannot go beyond their ignorance. They will continue to follow him like those fools who still praise Lenin and Stalin in Russia. Obama's fools and Stalin's fools share the same drink of illusion."
  5. "Russia lost its' civil war with the Reds and millions suffered torture and death for almost 75 years under the tyranny of the United Soviet Socialist Republic. Russians survived with a new and stronger faith in God and ever growing Christian Church. The question is how long will the once "Land of the Free" remain the United Socialist States of America? Their suffering has only begun."

http://www.nobackflow.com/sewerage.htm

  1. In the year 2000, in Pineville Louisiana, city workers mistakenly connected a pressurized sewer line to an underground water pipe.
  2. The filters on downstream washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerator ice-maker began clogging with a white stringy substance, which residents later learned was used toilet paper.
  3. The water heaters in some homes filled up with what they originally thought was dirt -- but turned out to be excrement.
  4. Some residents reported the tap water was the color of mud. One neighbor told CNN, "Whenever we'd take a shower it really smelled..."
  5. It took the city nearly 3 months to discover the source and correct the problem.
  6. "City officials say health risks were minimal because enough chlorine is put in the water supply to kill most bacteria. But residents of this central Louisiana city, who were temporarily ordered to boil their tap water, are disgusted and angry." "The fact that it could happen may be disgusting, but so far there's been no medical evidence of anybody getting sick or having any problems because of this," said Dr. John Naponick of the Louisiana Office of Public Health.
  7. The city paid a $1.2 million settlement.
  8. It has been a long-standing common practice to require residual chlorine in water supplies as a safety precaution against backflow and cross connection issues.
  9. "The main purpose of residual chlorine is to kill the harmful pathogens that might enter the system along the way to the consumer."
  10. "The premise of maintaining residual chlorine is that the distribution system is protected from cross-connection contaminants, that is, contaminants entering the system by means of a negative hydraulic gradient..."
  11. Other similar incidents have occurred as well. One is called the Mizner Park "Lemonade Incident"
  12. A vendor hooked up to a hose bibb connected to reclaimed water and used it to make lemonade for the public... The reclaimed water contained a high amount of worms and solid material, like toilet paper.

Chlorine vs Hydrogen Peroxide
http://www.thepoultrysite.com/articles/1411/comparison-of-hydrogen-peroxide-products-for-water-sanitation
http://www.lenntech.com/processes/disinfection/chemical/disinfectants-hydrogen-peroxide.htm

  1. There appears to be some benefits, but also liabilities to using hydrogen peroxide.
  2. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a weak acid that works as an oxidiser similar to chlorine.
  3. The key by-products formed when hydrogen peroxide is used are water and oxygen.
  4. The hydrogen peroxide found in drugstores or pharmacies is only a 3% concentration.
  5. Products used for water disinfection commonly range from 16 to 34%.
  6. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used to oxidise iron, manganese and sulphur, which can then be removed with filtration.
  7. Hydrogen peroxide can alter chlorine, making it less harmful.
  8. Hydrogen peroxide could be more effective at killing anaerobic microbes, but in promoting aerobic microbes, because it results in more highly oxygenated water.
  9. H2O2 breaks down so quickly, it can be ineffective at disinfecting lengthy or seldom used infrastructure.
  10. Stabilized products add about 2 days to the life of peroxide treatment.
  11. Hydrogen peroxide itself can also be associated with other health risks.
  12. It can irritate the eyes, skin and mucous membranes.
  13. Laboratory tests with bacteria show that hydrogen peroxide is mutagenic; it changes and damages DNA.
  14. The effect of chronic H2O2 exposure on humans is unknown. Additional research is needed.

  1. Experts have said for 100 years that over-grazing has caused desertification.
  2. They shot 40,000 elephants in Africa in order to save the grasslands, but the grasslands got worse.
  3. Savory was so sorrowful over the elephants he has since "devoted his life" to solving this problem.
  4. "Clearly, we have never understood what is causing desertification, which has destroyed many civilizations and now threatens us globally."
  5. (Show 11.00 to 12.20 minutes.)
  6. "There is only one option.... left to climatologists and scientists, and that is to do the unthinkable, and to use livestock... as a proxy for former herds and predators to mimic nature."
  7. (Look at photo contrasts at 15 to18 minutes.)
  8. Allan Savory theorizes that we are preventing sequestration of CO2 by unintentionally causing grasslands to become deserts, and thereby hastening climate change.

What to Expect When No One's Expecting: America's Coming Demographic Disaster
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1594036411/

  1. Do you think America is too crowded?
  2. For years, we have been warned about the looming danger of overpopulation: people jostling for space on a planet that's busting at the seams and running out of oil and food and land and everything else.
  3. It's all bunk. The "population bomb" never exploded. Instead, statistics from around the world make clear that since the 1970s, we've been facing exactly the opposite problem: people are having too few babies. Population growth has been slowing for two generations. The world's population will peak, and then begin shrinking, within the next fifty years. In some countries, it's already started. Japan, for instance, will be half its current size by the end of the century. In Italy, there are already more deaths than births every year. China's One-Child Policy has left that country without enough women to marry its men, not enough young people to support the country's elderly, and an impending population contraction that has the ruling class terrified.
  4. And all of this is coming to America, too. In fact, it's already here. Middle-class Americans have their own, informal one-child policy these days. And an alarming number of upscale professionals don't even go that far-they have dogs, not kids. In fact, if it weren't for the wave of immigration we experienced over the last thirty years, the United States would be on the verge of shrinking, too.
  5. What happened? Everything about modern life-from Bugaboo strollers to insane college tuition to government regulations-has pushed Americans in a single direction, making it harder to have children. And making the people who do still want to have children feel like second-class citizens.
  6. What to Expect When No One's Expecting explains why the population implosion happened and how it is remaking culture, the economy, and politics both at home and around the world.
  7. Because if America wants to continue to lead the world, we need to have more babies.

Supreme Court is asked to hear challenge to EPA's CO2 "endangerment" finding
http://www.pacificlegal.org/releases/Supreme-Court-is-asked-to-hear-challenge-to-EPAs-CO2-endangerment-finding

  1. Attorneys with Pacific Legal Foundation today asked the United States Supreme Court to hear PLF's challenge to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's greenhouse gas "endangerment" finding.
  2. PLF's petition for certiorari to the court, filed today, notes that EPA failed to submit the proposed "endangerment" finding for independent scientific scrutiny as required by the Clean Air Act.
  3. At issue is EPA's finding, announced in December, 2009, that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from automobiles pose a danger to public health and welfare. The Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. Section 4365(c)(1)), requires that such regulations must first be submitted to EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB) before they can be promulgated. In issuing its CO2 finding, EPA failed to comply with this legal requirement.
  4. PLF first petitioned the agency, in February, 2010, to rescind the endangerment finding and submit it to the SAB as the law mandates. When EPA declined, PLF filed a federal lawsuit, in October, 2010, and subsequently an appeal in conjunction with other parties who challenged the endangerment finding on separate grounds. An adverse decision - upholding the endangerment finding - was rendered last June by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. District, and a request for review by an en banc panel was denied.
  5. "We are asking the Supreme Court to hear this case because EPA cannot be allowed to place itself above the law. In issuing its CO2 finding, EPA illegally shielded its work product from peer review. That's unacceptable as a matter of science, impermissible as a matter of law - and should be downright offensive for anyone concerned about openness, accountability, and integrity in the public sector."

  1. 2013 Lexus LS with on-board radar and video cameras to monitor the road and the driver.
  2. Features involve car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure technologies.
  3. The cameras and radar equipment can detect traffic signals, lane lines and other vehicles.
  4. The technology aims to prevent crashes-a Toyota spokesman said zero collisions are the goal.
  5. The car can be driver-assisted or completely self-driving. When a driver is at the wheel, Toyota's technology could boost safety by detecting obstacles or alerting the driver if the driver is falling asleep.
  6. Other companies involved are: Google, Volvo, Audi, tested a self-drive convoy on a Spanish motorway, completing a 125-mile trip, in the first public test of such convoy vehicles.
  7. Reports are that driverless cars are coming sooner than consumers may think.
  8. Google's Larry Page said. "Do you really want to use all your concrete and steel to build parking lots? It seems pretty stupid. If we have automated cars, or even if we have some fraction of automated cars, we'll save hundreds of millions of dollars on parking."
  9. An autonomous car can drop the driver off to the office, then park itself. Later, the worker's smartphone detects when the driver is leaving the office and proceeds immediately to pick up the driver.

  2. Examples of cattle restoring grasslands and even barren land by grazing.
  3. Not having animals on the land can make it like a desert. Top soil dries up and blows away.
  4. Attempts at preservation of vernal pools by removing cattle resulted in invasive foreign species of vegetation and loss of rare species. Returning cattle restored the vernal pools.
  5. Preservation of the Verde River by removing cattle from sedge meadows, in order to save the threatened spikedace minnow, resulted in changing the type of vegetation, eroding the meadows, and totally eliminating the spikedace.
  6. The sedge meadow and spikedace had co-existed with cattle for 100 years. But once the cattle were removed, trees invaded the sedge meadow, caused turbulence in the river, and eroded the topsoil down to the rocks. It took the landscape back thousands of years--back to the pleistocene era.
  7. Everything he learned from environmentalists about using the land was wrong. When humans manage and use the land it grows more fertile and better suited to life. When humans are prevented from using the land it becomes sterile and barren.
  8. Environmentalists are too often about politics, not really the environment.
  9. Dan said, "I don't think we have invented environmentalism yet."

  1. They recognize the anti-Agenda 21 "movement has not peaked. It is on an upward trajectory." So they are worried.
  2. They regard anyone who is against "sustainability" as uninformed (or ignorant), driven by fear and emotion, and "cannot be persuaded by logic."
  3. They view themselves as visionaries and "sustainability professionals" who are fortunate to see things clearly.
  4. They see the solution as listening, dialoging, and letting people "talk through their fears," but not in changing their own policies.
  5. They are NOT listening in order to learn, or even to understand, but to placate those who disagree with them.
  6. They are arrogant and dangerous.

EPA Goes Too Far On Stormwater
http://www.wateronline.com/doc.mvc/epa-goes-too-far-on-stormwater-0001

  1. Dated January 10, 2013
  2. As reported by Legal Newsline, the EPA issued an edict to nearly halve the amount of water flowing into Fairfax's Accotink Creek in an attempt to reduce sediment buildup, which contributes to poor water quality. Under the Clean Water Act, the EPA protects water quality by setting limits on the amount of pollutants discharged into waterways - total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) - but in this way, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) argued, the EPA was treating water itself as a pollutant.
  3. "EPA cannot be allowed to exceed its clearly limited statutory authority," U.S. District Judge Liam O'Grady said in his decision. "Stormwater runoff is not a pollutant, so EPA is not authorized to regulate it via TMDL."
  4. Cuccinelli, who argued on behalf of the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Fairfax Country Board of Supervisors, went further:
  5. "EPA's thinking here was that if Congress didn't explicitly prohibit the agency from doing something, that meant it could, in fact, do it," he stated. "Logic like that would lead the EPA to conclude that if Congress didn't prohibit it from invading Mexico, it had the authority to invade Mexico. This incredibly flawed thinking would have allowed the agency to dramatically expand its power at its own unlimited discretion. Today, the court said otherwise."

Is California being run by eco-fascists?
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/jan/19/california-eco-fascists/

  1. One might think a book called "Eco-fascists" would emanate from a conservative think-tank. Elizabeth Nickson, however, is a committed environmentalist and mainstream journalist who was mugged by what she now calls "the tyranny of the environmental movement."
  2. The final irony, as Nickson argues persuasively, is that "ecosystem" science is deeply flawed and often destructive of the nature it supposedly preserves--all at the worldwide cost of millions of human lives and trillions of life-enhancing dollars.

Anti-Human Environmentalism
http://drtimball.com/about/this-site/
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/705912/posts

  1. "A reporter asked Dr. Wurster whether or not the ban on the use of DDT would not encourage the use of the very toxic materials, Parathion, Azedrin and Methylparathion, the organo-phosphates, [and] nerve gas derivatives. And he said 'Probably'. The reporter then asked him if these organo-phosphates did not have a long record of killing people. And Dr. Wurster, reflecting the views of a number of other scientists, said 'So what? People are the cause of all the problems; we have too many of them; we need to get rid of some of them; and this is as good a way as any.'" (Victor J. Yannacone, Jr., lawyer and co-founder of the Environmental Defense Fund, on EDF co-founder Dr. Charles Wurster, at a May 20, 1970 speech at the Union League Club in New York City. Published in the Congressional Record as Serial No.92-A of Hearings on Federal Pesticide Control Act of 1971, pg.266-267)
  2. "Given the total, absolute, and final disappearance of Homo Sapiens, not only would the Earth's community of life continue to exist, but in all probability, its well-being would be enhanced. Our presence, in short, is not needed. And if we were to take the standpoint of that Life Community and give voice to its true interests, the ending of the human epoch on Earth would most likely be greeted with a hearty "Good riddance!" (Philosopher Paul Taylor in Respect for Nature: A Theory of Environmental Ethics, Princeton Univ Press, 1989, pg. 115)
  3. "Human happiness, and certainly human fecundity, are not as important as a wild and healthy planet. I know social scientists who remind me that people are part of nature, but it isn't true. Somewhere along the line - at about a billion years ago - we quit the contract and became a cancer. We have become a plague upon ourselves and upon the Earth." We are not interested in the utility of a particular species, or free-flowing river, or ecosystem to mankind. They have...more value - to me - than another human body, or a billion of them...Until such time as Homo Sapiens should decide to rejoin nature, some of us can only hope for the right virus to come along. (David M. Graber, National Park Service biologist, in a review of Bill McKibben's 'The End of Nature,' in the Los Angeles Times Book Review, October 22, 1989, pg. 9)
  4. "Childbearing [should be] a punishable crime against society...all potential parents [should be] required to use contraceptive chemicals, the government issuing antidotes to citizens chosen for childbearing." (Herr David Brower, founder of Friends of the Earth, quoted in 'The Coercive Utopians' by Rael Jean Isaac and Erich Isaac (1985 Regnery Gateway Inc.)
  5. "I have better thoughts of those alligators now that I have seen them at home. Honourable representatives of the great saurians of an older creation, may you long enjoy your lilies and rushes, and be blessed now and then with a mouthful of terror-stricken man by way of a dainty!" (John Muir, The Eight Wilderness Discovery Books, p 148) (founder of the Sierra Club)
  6. "I got the impression that instead of going out to shoot birds, I should go out and shoot the kids who shoot birds." (Paul Watson, a founder of 'Greenpeace,' quoted in 'Access to Energy' Vol.17 No.4, December 1989)
  7. "We, in the Green movement, aspire to a cultural model in which the killing of a forest will be considered more contemptible and more criminal than the sale of 6-year old children to Asian brothels." (Carl Amery of the Green Party, quoted in 'Mensch & Energie,' April 1983)
  8. "Man is no more important than any other species ... It may well take our extinction to set things straight. (David Foreman, 'Earth First!' spokesman, quoted by M. John Fayhee in 'Backpacker' magazine, September 1988, pg. 22)
  9. "We have wished...for a disaster or for a social change to come and bomb us back into the stone age..." (Environmentalist Stewart Brand in 'The Whole Earth Catalog')
  10. "As radical environmentalists, we can see AIDS not as a problem but a necessary solution." ('Earth First!' periodical, quoted in 'Planet Stricken' by Alan Pell Crawford and Art Levine, Vogue magazine, September 1989, pg. 710)
  11. "If you'll give the idea a chance ... you might agree that the extinction of Homo Sapiens would mean survival for millions if not billions of other Earth-dwelling species." (The 'Voluntary Extinction Movement,' quoted by Daniel Seligman in 'Down With People,' in 'Fortune' magazine, September 23, 1991)

Voluntary Human Extinction Movement
http://www.vhemt.org/

  1. Phasing out the human race by voluntarily ceasing to breed will allow Earth's biosphere to return to good health. Crowded conditions and resource shortages will improve as we become less dense.
  2. VHEMT (pronounced vehement) is a movement not an organization. It's a movement advanced by people who care about life on planet Earth. We're not just a bunch of misanthropes and anti-social, Malthusian misfits, taking morbid delight whenever disaster strikes humans. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Voluntary human extinction is the humanitarian alternative to human disasters.
  3. We don't carry on about how the human race has shown itself to be a greedy, amoral parasite on the once-healthy face of this planet. That type of negativity offers no solution to the inexorable horrors which human activity is causing.
  4. Rather, The Movement presents an encouraging alternative to the callous exploitation and wholesale destruction of Earth's ecology.
  5. As VHEMT Volunteers know, the hopeful alternative to the extinction of millions of species of plants and animals is the voluntary extinction of one species: Homo sapiens... us.
  6. Each time another one of us decides to not add another one of us to the burgeoning billions already squatting on this ravaged planet, another ray of hope shines through the gloom.
  7. When every human chooses to stop breeding, Earth's biosphere will be allowed to return to its former glory, and all remaining creatures will be free to live, die, evolve (if they believe in evolution), and will perhaps pass away, as so many of Nature's "experiments" have done throughout the eons.
  8. It's going to take all of us going.

(Are we doing our part to make sure humans do NOT go extinct?]

Conservation Biology and Conservation Ethic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_biology
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_ethic

  1. Conservation biology is the scientific study of the nature and status of Earth's biodiversity with the aim of protecting species, their habitats, and ecosystems...
  2. The conservation ethic is based on the findings of conservation biology.
  3. Those who follow the conservation ethic are termed conservationists.
  4. The Conservation Ethic is part of the Politics series on Progressivism
  5. [Conservation Biology is grounded in the "progressive" ideology that mankind is a blight on the planet.]
  6. [It is based on the theory that "scarcity" is the natural state of the world, so resources must be conserved by an overarching authority. It believes that life is a "zero-sum game" that some people and species can only win by others losing.]

Some Key Points in the Book Eco-Fascists

  1. Abundance is the natural state of the world.
  2. A lack of property ownership results in environmental catastrophes.
  3. That a clean and healthy environment REQUIRES mankind.

The Environmental Optimist

  1. PERC interview of Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist
  2. Even though there are more of us every year, and even though we prefer more land intensive forms of food, we can't keep up with our increasing efficiency--productivity exceeds population growth. Despite population increases, we are taking more and more land OUT of agriculture and turning it back to nature reserves, yet still producing more.
  3. Going "back to nature" would be a catastrophe for nature. A hunter-gatherer needs about a thousand hectares to support himself and even at that level he can extinguish species. We would have a much larger impact on nature if we tried to live lower-tech lives than if we try to live high-tech lives.

Outer Space Treaty
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty

  1. The Outer Space Treaty forms the basis of international space law. It governs the activities of states in the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies.
  2. The treaty was originated by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union in 1967. Since then 127 countries have adopted the treaty.
  3. Among other things, the treaty requires that the exploration of outer space shall be done to benefit all countries and shall be free for exploration and use by all the States.
  4. The treaty forbids any government from claiming anything in space as a resource, because they should be "the Common heritage of mankind."
  5. It says that "outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means."
  6. It also states that "the activities of non-governmental entities in outer space... shall require authorization and continuing supervision by the appropriate State Party to the Treaty."
  7. The Moon Treaty of 1979 was meant to be the follow-up to the Outer Space Treaty...

Moon Treaty
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_Treaty

  1. An agreement governing the activities of states on the moon and other celestial bodies.
  2. All celestial bodies, including the orbits around such bodies, must conform to international law, including the UN Charter.
  3. It bans all exploration and uses of celestial bodies without the approval or benefit of other states under the common heritage of all mankind.
  4. It requires that the UN Secretary-General must be notified of all celestial activities.
  5. Declares all states have an equal right to conduct research on celestial bodies.
  6. Declares that for any samples obtained during research activities, the state that obtained them must consider making part of it available to all countries/scientific communities for research.
  7. Bans altering the environment of celestial bodies and requires that states must take measures to prevent accidental contamination.
  8. Bans any state from claiming sovereignty over any territory of celestial bodies.
  9. Bans any ownership of any extraterrestrial property by any organization or person, unless that organization is international and governmental.
  10. Requires all resource extraction and allocation be made by an international regime.
  11. The treaty was finalized in 1979 and entered into force for the ratifying parties in 1984. Fortunately, the L5 Society successfully defeated the treaty in the US Senate.
  12. So far, the only states who have ratified the Moon Treaty are ones who do not have an active space program.

  2. Harvesting resources from asteroids--everything from water to platinum. Asteroids represent a nearly infinite source of precious raw materials. This technology also helps to establish and maintain a human presence in space.
  3. [This requires securing ownership rights--property rights--over space-based resources.]
  4. They plan to make Seattle into the "Silicon Valley of Space."

Is a Shift Beginning in Environmentalism?
http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2012/12/modern_green_movement_eco_pragmatists_are_challenging_traditional_environmentalists.single.html
http://www.thebreakthrough.org/images/Death_of_Environmentalism.pdf

  1. The "Save-the-Earth" brand of environmentalism has long idealized wilderness while simultaneously designating humanity as the scourge of the planet.
  2. But some environmentalists are beginning to consider that maybe humans don't have to die in order to have a clean environment.
  3. "The human footprint has so massively transformed the planet as to usher in a new geological epoch. It's called the Anthropocene... But this is the world as it is, so we might as well reconcile the needs of people with the needs of nature."
  4. Modernist greens don't dispute the ecological tumult associated with the Anthropocene, but they are beginning to "recognize that people are a fundamental part of all ecosystems that make up Planet Earth, including the sea..." We must craft "a new vision of a planet in which nature--forests, wetlands, diverse species, and other ancient ecosystems--exists amid a wide variety of modern, human landscapes."
  5. [At some point in the past powerful interests took over the green movement as a vehicle for political advantage. From that point on, research funding had an agenda and scientific evidence was twisted to meet the political purpose, instead of simply supporting environmental goals. Real environmentalists have been misled by false evidence ever since. Finally, some within their own ranks are beginning to see through the subterfuge and are attempting a reformation in environmentalism. But don't let your guard down, because many have invested their whole life in these fallacies, and they won't go away quietly.]

Livability

  1. Livability means being able to take your kids to school, go to work, see a doctor, drop by the grocery or post office, go out to dinner and a movie, and play with your kids at the park, all without having to get into your car. Livability means building the communities that help Americans live the lives they want to live-whether those communities are urban centers, small towns, or rural areas.

Magnasanti: SimCity Under Agenda 21
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=simcity-2013-players-face-tough-energy-environment-choices

http://futurecity.org/lb/simcity/activities
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTJQTc-TqpU (7 min video -- play from 5:18 to 6:30)

  1. SimCity was first released in 1989. (Which was coincidentally the same year of United Nations Resolution 44/228, calling for the Conference on Environment and Development, which ultimately led to Agenda 21 in 1992.)
  2. For more than 20 years, SimCity has been used as a tool for entry-level training of Urban Planners.
  3. Vincent Oscala, a 22-year old architecture student from the Philippines, spent about 4 years experimenting with SimCity to find the optimal parameters for a maximum city population to "beat" the game. In simulation it is stable for 50,000 years. His solution, which he named Magnasanti, reveals the underlying assumptions of the game--Soviet style central planning. (Which you could also refer to as Smart Growth or Agenda 21) [I don't believe the creators of SimCity knew this, they simply modeled what they saw Western Urban Planners already doing.]
  4. In Magnasanti there are over 6 million residents, but no roads, so there is no traffic congestion. Instead, they have an elaborate subway system. Nearly everything people need is within walking distance. In fact wherever they go it's like their own cookie-cutter neighborhood anyway, so there is little desire to travel.
  5. Hidden under the illusion of a successful city is a highly regimented lifestyle. They have high unemployment, but little education, so they don't leave. There is no crime because they have a hyper-efficient police state to maintain obedience. There are no fire stations, schools, or hospitals. They have high air pollution, poor health, short lives, and consequently, a stable population. They have all been successfully dumbed down, sickened, enslaved, and mind-controlled just enough to keep this simulation running for 50,000 years.
